Godstone Fete

Castle FacadeFetes in Godstone started in 1943, were held in the grounds of Godstone Court (now demolished and developed into Court Road and Dewlands) and raised funds for the British Legion.

In the 1950’s the annual August Bank Holiday fete was held on the Green and has done so each year since.  John Vaughan, a British Legion stalwart and founder of the Village Forum, was involved.

The present fete raises funds for village organisations, provides a venue for village societies to raise money for themselves, and provides much fun and entertainment for the public.

PunchandJudyOrganisations wishing to become beneficiaries of the Fete, have to apply in writing to the committee by the end of April preceding the Fete.  They are expected to take an active role in helping run the event.  Since 1985, over £100,000 has been given to beneficiaries and good causes, including a play safety area for children on the Green and a defibrillator at the nearby Orpheus Centre.

The present committee are always looking for volunteers to join them.

Godstone Fete & Donkey Derby 2015:

DonkeyDerbyLast year’s Annual Fete and Donkey Derby was held on 31st August 2015, and despite unfavourable weather was very much a success.   Fortunately much of the preparatory work had been carried out over the weekend in dry weather.
The Fete got off to a spirited start when Jane Cooper from Godstone Crafts performed the opening ceremony.

There was the welcome return of the Dog Show along with the varied range of stalls and attractions.

Unluckily the day started with light drizzle, which got heavier through the later part of the morning but stopped at midday giving welcome relief for the afternoon.  There were very few cancellations and the helpers were impressively stoic.

The number of visitors was surprisingly high and all helpers, stallholders, and attraction operators did a splendid job. There were few concessions to the weather and the jockeys survived unscathed.

A presentation evening was held in early December to distribute grants to local organisations and charities, and as a thank you to all those that contributed to the success of the venture.

The location is on the village Green and free parking is available while space exists.

(Sat nav users should head for the Post Office at 61 High Street, Godstone, RH9 8DT)

DonkeysOn the day, information and assistance is available at the organizers HQ located at the pavilion with the castle façade.

The Godstone Fete is run entirely by a wonderful team of volunteers, but we never have enough, so PLEASE ask how you can help with jobs big or small. WE NEED YOU!
