History of Age Concern Godstone
A
ge Concern Godstone started life during World War II as Godstone Old People’s Welfare Committee, to help alleviate some of the hardships suffered by older people during those difficult years.  Along with many other such organisations, the name was changed to Age Concern in the early 1970’s. The type of assistance required and provided may have changed much over the years – soup kitchens and requests for coal no longer occur – but the principle is the same as ever.  Age Concern Godstone exists to help and advise the older members of the community with their lives, be it with transport to doctors, to clinics, to hospital out-patients, with up to date advice on age-related problems, social activities within the village, or perhaps just a friendly, impartial ear for their troubles.

AND Our  Organisation now…….

Although not supported financially by Age Concern Surrey or the national body, we belong to The Federation of Age Concern and as such are able to hold comprehensive (and regularly up-dated) Fact Sheets on all relevant topics, and which are available for anybody to borrow or photocopy. Our Committee meets once a month for about an hour and has close contact with statutory bodies as well as receiving up to date information on all topics concerning with elderly people.  We like to encourage new faces onto the Committee, to broaden our ideas and scope and welcome input from anybody who is interested in the welfare of older people.

Creative Craft Club– a place to share your enthusiasms and skills with others, to learn new skills and techniques or just to meet with like-minded ‘crafty’ adults of all ages, for an afternoon of pleasant company. Alternate Mondays.

Age Concern Transport Scheme– We can usually provide a volunteer driver for visits to the local doctors, out-patient appointments at hospitals, chiropody clinics, etc.  A minimum donation of £1 per journey is suggested to help offset expenses.

Drivers able to help out on a random and occasional basis required!

Exercise for an Active Retirement– Wednesday afternoons in term time in the White Hart Barn, Godstone.  Exercise to music for both men and women, which can greatly enhance suppleness and mobility, help to prevent falls and give a feeling of well-being.  Nothing too serious, but our Tutor is a qualified member of the Extend organisation and well qualified to make the session fun as well as beneficial.

Fun & Games at Oakleigh”Committee Member Joanne is the driving force behind a  programme of morning activities, such as art, music and movement, reminiscence, in addition to the well-established Age Concern Bingo Sessions.  These activities are eagerly awaited by Oakleigh Residents and a few more volunteers to help run them would be more than welcome.
