The Royal British Legion
Godstone Branch

| Branch No. BR2078 |
Registered Charity No. 21279 |
Godstone Branch of the British
Legion was formally constituted on the 21 July 1921, a successor to the Godstone
Branch of the Comrades of the Great War which was formed on the 19 October
1919. The Comrades were absorbed into the British Legion in 1921, and the
Legion received its Royal status and title in 1979.
The objects of the Royal British
Legion [RBL] can be summarised as providing comradeship, assistance and support,
financially or otherwise, to members of the ex-Service community [men and women
who have served in the armed forces of the Crown] and to their families.
Although the majority of the
beneficiaries are elderly it must be remembered that the services are constantly
involved in conflicts and duties around the world and recent casualties show
that we can be asked to help a young service man or woman, or their families, at
any time.
The welfare work of the RBL is
funded from the Poppy Appeal - associated in most minds with November but the
Appeal operates throughout the year from 1 June to 31 May and funds are raised
by means of events and functions locally and nationally.
In addition to welfare work the
RBL has its ceremonial side - also largely associated with November but other
events are commemorated with parades, church services and entertainments
throughout the year.
Little known but highly valued is
the RBL's Pilgrimage service, conducting parties of relatives to War Graves in
fields of former conflicts throughout the world, with financial support in cases
where needed. The RBL also has several homes throughout the country long
term, or short term respite, care to those in need.
Membership of the RBL is open
equally to men and women, ex-Service people as full members and Associate
membership open to all who support our aims. Also highly valued is our
Women's Section the members of which are the wives or female dependants of
service men. The Section supports the Branch in all its activities, in
addition to arranging their own events of a social and fund-raising nature.
Branch meetings are held in the
evening of the second Friday each month, in Godstone Club; visitors and
potential new members are always welcome.
